Definitely out of hand now!
It's time for our stupid Polies to show some balls and just deny access.
It's the only way to stop it!
Bring back Johnny!

Bring back off-shore processing...that will fix it...eliminate the incentive to the people smugglers if at the end of their voyage they either get turned around and sent back from where they came or sent to a country totally separate to us for processing.

It seems simple enough to action it and I'm sure it would stop the boats pretty much straight away but these clowns are carrying on like two year olds in a sandpit and don't want to be the ones to give in!

Well it is the classic game of one-up-manship - don't roll over and give the other side the edge and indeed prove them right. The problem is that stubbornness is costing the public constructive action on the issue.
Well it seems the Labor party is still dragging its feet with this issue and insisting upon their plan to have the off-shore processing in Malaysia. They have the perfect chance to resolve it with the Coalition support and even if it means relinquishing their complete position on it and resorting to the Coalition one, it takes it off the national agenda and that is a good thing for them!!

I can't believe Julia Gillard is that stupid (or maybe I can)...she is on a hiding to nothing if she doesn't deviate from her current position and just accept Abbott's olive branch on this issue. He's not going to budge and why should he if he has a proven policy that works?
Boats are coming in in record numbers and all Julia and her Labor party colleagues are good for is squabbling over an issue they just can't politically win...the hearts and minds of people will never side with the Labor party on this issue.
Abbott himself probably gave too much ground in his proposal for a solution to the wavering and undecided colleagues in his party room who threaten to cross the floor (the 1 - 2 of them) because firstly, it doesn't matter if they get the bill through the lower house as the upper house will provide it with the greatest test as Labor need the coalition to side with them as the greens will never support it and secondly the amendments of Abbott made of increasing the refugee intake while having nothing to do with aslyum seeker quotas being allowed temporary visas into this country as it relates to immigration through official channels, still gives of the impression that Australia has an extra 7000 spots up for grabs over above the previous 13000 annual in-take and not to mention the sheer fact that UNHCR will be operating the detention centre in Nauru which may provide additional incentive and encouragement as boat people smugglers and aslyum seekers may think that they are going to be treated more humanely than if it were run solely by the government.
So I think both sides have made mistakes but the biggest mistake is for Labor and that they haven't just thrown up the white flag and accepted Abbott's position.

The only problem with voting now is currently both sides are as useless as the other.
I actually watched alot of the debate over this what a bunch of hypocracy there both arguing positions are totally oposite views to a few years ago.
The only figure i didnt hear that would be interesting, would be what the increase in refugee numbers in Indonesia and Malaysia have been over the last 7 years.
The experts seem to agree that Naru and Malaysia will not work alone now.
I tend to agree with the experts and greens in increasing the refugee numbers, more assistance to UN resulting in faster processing in both of these countries camps with alot more assisitance/resources on the ground and shores directly at the source of the problem.
I think if bit of each parties policy was used they would come up with a solution but while all are to pig headed stubborn to move it will remain as it is.
Money might be well spent on the refugees being educated on the risks and presented with images and detailed information of each of these tragedies(as bad as it is) thats resulted in boarding these vessels.

The only problem with voting now is currently both sides are as useless as the other. I actually watched alot of the debate over this what a bunch of hypocracy there both arguing positions are totally oposite views to a few years ago. Actually the only party that has shifted has been the Labor party but it isn't as far enough to the right in order to be a workable solution. Instead, given that it only uses Australian and Australian territorial islands as places where the processing is conducted, this still provides the boat smugglers and the people that seek to come here illegally with enough incentive to board the boat and seek asylum... Well the coalition according to Abbott are lifting the total number of refugees Australia accepts from around 13000 odd to 20,000... but the problem with saying 'if we got more assistance from the UN in these countries we would be able to process them more quickly' and as a result, they wouldn't need to use this current dangerous means via the sea they favour largely atm... which is to say that The UN is really in no position to provide Malaysia with any assistance if it isn't a signatory to one of its treaties that govern this area...Nauru is different but I think an Abbott led government would be more than happy to pour the necessary resources into Nauru to get the processing facility up and operating at a reasonable level... The solution is simple, forget this 'expert' (which is just a civillian)committee which I might add is chaired by a defence official (albeit former Chief of Defence) who you would think could only contribute with insights and recommendations that only aimed at managed and controlling the issue and not coming up with a policy aimed at eliminating the root cause of all these illegal boat travellers...and just accept Abbott's pacific solution. Enough politics...it is clearly the most effective policy that has the runs on the board, so for the sake of this country and given how many have died and will die if something isn't done, just adopt it

Asylum seekers smile and wave as they arrive at Christmas Island CHRISTMAS Island is today preparing to offload yet more asylum seekers who arrived by boat overnight, most likely from Sri Lanka. The small ramshackled fishing vessel carrying the 39 mainly male asylum seekers is currently sitting not far from shore at Christmas Island’s cove, with around five Navy officers on board. The men waved and smiled this morning as they sat and stood on their rickety boat while being watched by the Navy. Their boat was intercepted overnight west of Christmas Island by HMAS Maitland and was moored in the cove last night. Preparations are currently underway to bring the passengers to shore where they will then be transferred to one of the overflowing detention facilities on the island. The boat is the latest in a recent influx which saw four boats intercepted or offloaded in about 24 hours from last Thursday night. Yesterday another boat carrying Sri Lankan men was also intercepted and the 53 passengers were brought to Flying Fish Cove. Yesterday also saw the arrival of 67 Sri Lankans at Christmas Island’s airport after they were flown from Cocos Islands where they landed last Friday. Passengers from another boat carrying 41 people, whose identities are unknown, are also on their way to the island after being intercepted on Friday at the Ashmore Islands. A Sri Lankan man on board an asylum boat last week is suspected to have chicken pox, prompting a health warning to the large variety of staff who deal with asylum seekers when they reach the island. The workers have been advised to seek treatment at the island’s hospital if they develop a rash or itch. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship said they were “closely monitoring the situation” and had arrangements in place including isolation accommodation if necessary. www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/another-boatload-of-asylum-seekers-will-be-offloaded-at-christmas-island-after-arriving-last-night/story-fncvk70o-1226414381485
