Latest from AJ Drug test. Allmendinger bringing experts to test: People familiar with AJ Allmendinger's suspension say the NASCAR driver has elected to bring his own experts to witness the testing of his "B" urine sample. Allmendinger was suspended by NASCAR on Saturday for failing a random drug test. He has said he tested positive for a stimulant he did not reveal, and has insisted he never "knowingly" took a banned substance. Under NASCAR's drug policy, an individual can bring in experts for the second test. Two people familiar with the case told The Associated Press that Allmendinger has chosen to bring a toxicologist and an attorney. They spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the process is confidential. Because Allmendinger is bringing his own people, the test of the sample will not occur until next week.(Associated Press)(7-12-2012) Tony Stewart Wins 2012 'Best Driver' ESPY Award: #14-Tony Stewart, three-time and reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champ, last night took home the 2012 ESPY for "Best Driver" at the 20th annual ESPY Awards on ESPN, beating out four-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti, F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and NHRA champion Del Worsham. Stewart put together an epic Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in what proved to be one of the most exciting seasons in NASCAR history last year. Stewart won five of the 10 races in the Chase, narrowly edging out Carl Edwards in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to take home the title. "I am thrilled to win the 'Best Driver' award after what turned out to be a great NASCAR season last year. I was fortunate enough to be able to take the checkered flag when it mattered most," said Stewart. "There were some great drivers and great champions in this category, so I cannot thank the NASCAR fans and everyone who voted enough for their unbelievable support." It is the third time Stewart has taken home "Best Driver" honors, winning in 2003 and 2006. Stewart was also nominated in the "Best Championship Performance" category this year. "I want to congratulate Tony on winning the ESPY for 'Best Driver' last night," said NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Steve Phelps. "His dramatic run to the championship highlighted his overall performance on the track last season, and we're thrilled the sports world recognized this achievement. Hats off to Tony Stewart and the entire Stewart-Haas Racing organization." Jimmie Johnson, who was a presenter for the "Best Comeback Athlete" award during last night's show, won the "Best Driver" award in each of the four previous seasons. NASCAR Nationwide Series star Danica Patrick also presented the "Best Team" award along with Steve Nash at last night's show to the Miami Heat. She teamed up with Justin Bieber to present the "Best Team" award at last year's ESPYs to the Dallas Mavericks.(NASCAR)(7-12-2012) Army to leave NASCAR as sponsor after 2012 season: The U.S. Army has decided not to renew its sponsorship with Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in 2013 as a primary sponsor of the #39 Chevy driven by Ryan Newman due to a reallocation of its marketing budget that will not include a presence in NASCAR. SHR is actively pursuing a strong brand to partner with the team and its roster of sponsors that also includes Office Depot, Mobil 1, Quicken Loans, GoDaddy.com, Haas Automation, Chevrolet, WIX Filters, Outback Steakhouse, Aspen Dental, Tornados, Coca-Cola, Oreo, Ritz, Bass Pro Shops and Code 3 Associates. Brett Frood, Executive Vice President, Stewart-Haas Racing: "The U.S. Army has been a great partner of Stewart-Haas Racing since the team's inception. It has been a mutually beneficial relationship, with the U.S. Army introducing training regimens that improved our pit crews while instilling the mental, physical and emotional strength of the U.S. Army Soldier in all of us. We remain very proud of our representation of the U.S. Army and its brave Soldiers who are 100 percent committed to our country. We will continue to activate on behalf of the U.S. Army for the rest of 2012, while also growing our other dynamic partnerships at Stewart-Haas Racing for the future." John Myers, Director, Marketing Support Element, Army Marketing and Research Group: "The U.S. Army has worked with Stewart-Haas Racing in a mutually beneficial and highly successful relationship for the past four seasons, and they've performed superbly as our partner on and off the track. The same can be said of other members of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series family we have sponsored during the past 10 seasons. The sport, our drivers and the passionate NASCAR fans embraced the Army's participation and created a tremendous opportunity for Americans to learn more about the profession of the Army Strong Soldier."(SHR)(7-10-2012) www.stewarthaasracing.com/media/index.php?article=920

National Guard indicates plans to stay as a sponsor: The National Guard Association of the United States today released the following statement by retired Maj. Gen. Gus L. Hargett Jr., the association president: "There is an effort underway in Congress to prohibit the U.S. military from sponsoring professional motorsports as part of military recruiting. On the surface, this may seem like a good idea in the face of current fiscal challenges. But a closer look reveals that such a ban would provide no real savings and only serve to hinder Defense Department efforts to reach the most qualified potential recruits. Recruiting for our all-volunteer force isn't what it used to be. Only one in every four young people is even eligible to join. And television advertising no longer carries the payoff it once did. Today, you have to know how smart, fit young people think, where they live and play, and go to them. The Army National Guard learned these lessons a few years ago. Traditional recruiting approaches no longer worked and our troop strength was shrinking. So we abandoned convention and focused our limited resources on an innovative marketing mix that linked recruiting messages to popular musicians and motorsports. It was a bold move, but it paid off. Recruiting steadily improved, both in terms of the quantity and quality of the applicants. Today, the Army National Guard has the fittest, most intelligent force in its history. Other military services noticed and have taken similar approaches. The link between military recruiting and motorsports is temporary. The results prove it's a match that works today. It may not in the future when other approaches may provide a better payoff. And that's the point. We applaud lawmakers like Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., and Rep. Barbara McCollum, D-Minn., for asking tough questions about how and where scarce defense dollars are spent. But we believe military marketing experts should evaluate return on investment and determine without restriction where best to put increasingly scarce recruiting dollars."(National Guard Association of the U.S. / Digital Journal)(7-13=2-2012) www.jayski.com/cupnews.htm

Andretti says Cup in 2013 'highly unlikely': Michael Andretti says time is running out for his Indianapolis-based racing organization to join NASCAR for next season. The owner of Andretti Autosport said it's now "highly unlikely" that he'll be involved with the Sprint Cup Series in 2013. "We've got a couple of (sponsorship) deals working, but it's getting late," Andretti said following the first practice of the Edmonton Indy. "It's not dead yet, but it's highly unlikely." Andretti bought his IndyCar team in 2003, but the cost of participating in IndyCar is at least one-third of what it takes to be in Sprint Cup.(USA Today/Indianapolis Star)(7-21-2012) content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2012/07/andretti-says-cup-in-2013-highly-unlikely/1No surprise there, RPM to Dodge I've said from the start!

INDIANAPOLIS -- If you've been wondering why it took Chevrolet so long to decide to race the Camaro nameplate in the Nationwide Series, don't worry. You're not alone, according to Pat Suhy, manager of Chevy Racing's oval track group. There were a number of folks within the General Motors building who had the same queries. Plus, you can add NASCAR's president to the list. “ To have the Camaro now in the Nationwide Series, against the other pony cars, is kind of fun for an old guy. ” -- MIKE HELTON "I'm like our fans -- I'm a bit of a car guy -- so this is an exciting moment for us," Mike Helton said Thursday. "To have the Camaro now in the Nationwide Series, against the other pony cars, is kind of fun for an old guy." With the reintroduction of the nameplate in 2009, which led to Chevrolet leading the market segment for sports cars in sales for the next two model years, higher-ups decided it was time to switch from the Impala to Camaro for the 2013 racing season. "There's been pressure from a lot of places," Suhy said. "Clearly, it shows how enthusiastic people are about the Camaro to begin with, which is a good thing. If they said, 'We don't care what you race,' that would be a bad sign. "We had a lot of debate when we didn't do it the first time. And it wasn't an easy decision to make. But I think bringing it out now has us very excited. I hope the race fans are excited." It certainly got the attention of people inside the NASCAR garage, as close to a dozen current Nationwide drivers -- from Danica Patrick to Austin Dillon -- showed up for Thursday's media announcement in the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to witness the car's unveiling. Suhy said the drivers have shown a tremendous amount of interest in the 2013 design and how the Camaro will do against the competition. "If you're sitting in an Impala, racing a Mustang and a Challenger, it's like 'Well, it'd be cool if we had a Camaro,' " Suhy said. "So here it is." There's one catch: The car on display during the media conference hasn't been on the track. The car is a result of computer-aided design and scale models have been put in the wind tunnel, but still needs some road testing before it makes its debut at Daytona in 2013. Suhy said teams are currently building cars to begin that process. "We're cranking out parts basically to make them available to the teams," Suhy said. "And as they have the ability to put a car together and get ready to go to the track, we're obviously here to support that. I think you'll probably see them start to pop up maybe late August, early September at the places where they go test." According to the results of the wind tunnel tests, Suhy said teams should be much happier with the aerodynamics of the new car. But there won't be any major design changes made from here on out because of the NASCAR rule book. "Once we submitted the parts to NASCAR, we can't change anything," Suhy said. "It's up to the teams to go develop their chassis and aero packages. Obviously, there's some latitude on how they can hang the bodies on the cars, so they can help generate the kind of aero balance that their drivers like. "Hopefully, a lot of what they learned with the Impala applies to this. But they're going to have to go out and find out if all [the changes] have the same impact. www.nascar.com/nationwide-series/news/120726/camaro-nationwide-model-2013/index.htmlLooks ok, can't wait for it to kick some ass!

Just updating the news of the past couple of weeks... Dodge out of NASCAR at end of year Dodge announced Tuesday that it is withdrawing from the NASCAR competition following the 2012 season. Dodge was faced with a rebuilding phase beginning in 2013, after Penske Racing -- the lone NASCAR organization to field Dodges since 2009 -- chose to leave the manufacturer in favor of Ford Motor Company beginning next season. "We've spent an intense five months working to identify and evaluate all options for our future involvement in NASCAR," SRT Motorsports president Ralph Gilles said. "A number of opportunities emerged, and our team worked diligently to put a structure together to fit our overall business and competitive objectives. While we have been pleased and enthused with the amount of interest from teams and sponsors over that time, in the end, we simply couldn't develop the right structure." Penske has fielded Dodges since 2003, winning 29 Sprint Cup races to date and a Nationwide Series championship with driver Brad Keselowski. But in March, Penske announced the return to Ford, which the team had fielded from 1994 to 2002. "That was the piece that I feel like puts us in a position to make a run for the championship for the next few years," Keselowski said in March. "I think there were some limitations in making that happen with the road we were on, so we changed roads." Industry sources question whether Dodge's parent company, Fiat, has any passion for NASCAR, leading to Penske's decision to leave for Ford and, ultimately, Dodge's decision to leave the sport altogether, the sources say. "Dodge has been a great partner to NASCAR for many years, and they have been part of numerous memorable moments throughout our history," NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said. "They made a business decision not to return in 2013, as they did in 1977 before returning in 2001. We wish them well and hope they again will choose to return to NASCAR at a later date." Ford announced Monday that Roush-Yates engines would provide motors for Penske beginning in 2013, leaving questions about what may become of Penske's motor department and its 60-plus employee staff. This isn't the first time Dodge has chosen to leave NASCAR. The manufacturer pulled out of the sport in 1977 and didn't return until 2001. Since that time, Dodge has accumulated 55 Sprint Cup victories. "It's an extremely difficult decision to know that we won't be there for our fans next season," Gilles added. "It's important to note that we have not lost focus on 2012 or the commitment to our partnership with Penske Racing in both the Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series this season." m.espn.go.com/rpm/story?storyId=8242554Also, good news announced for us Dale Jr fans with the sponsorship of National Guard sorted for next season. National Guard extends sponsorship of Earnhardt, Jr.: The Army National Guard will continue as a primary sponsor of the #88 Sprint Cup Series team and driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. after extending its relationship with Hendrick Motorsports through the 2013 NASCAR season. The National Guard will receive primary paint schemes in 20 Sprint Cup races, including the 2013 Daytona 500, and prominent brand placement during all non-primary events. The National Guard's association with Hendrick Motorsports began with sponsorship of the #25 Sprint Cup team for the 2007 season. Its most recent contract, which included 18 primary paint schemes per year with the #88 team, was set to expire at the end of 2012. "It's an honor to be associated with the National Guard and its Citizen Soldiers," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "Like many of the world's most innovative marketers and leading brands, the Guard sees the opportunities that our sport presents, and they have built a strong effort around it. As we go into 2013 together, we'll continue to focus on the performance of the program both on and off the racetrack." Additional sponsorship for the #88 Chevy will be announced at a later date.(Hendrick Motorsports)(8-17-2012) www.hendrickmotorsports.com/news/article/2012/08/17/National-Guard-extends-sponsorship-of-Hendrick-Motorsports-through-2013

And for all the naysayers out there saying that Hendrick Motorsports are cheating you can all go and **** yourself, because it's all LEGAL!! NASCAR: Rear housing devices legal: NASCAR officials said mechanical devices the Hendrick Motorsports teams and other organizations in the Sprint Cup Series are using to gain a competitive advantage in the rear housing are legal -- today. "We watch it weekly because it has ramped up the last couple of months,'' series director John Darby said on Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway. "If it stays pretty level we'll probably leave it alone the rest of the year. "If there is a higher extreme somebody takes it to that could create issues we don't want to see, then we'll react to that.'' The HMS cars in May were the first this season to develop devices that allow the rear axle to turn slightly to follow the front, creating more speed particularly in the corners. "Where we're at today, right now, there is no illegal procedures going on,'' Darby said. "Obviously, there was one we found Tuesday that was questionable. But the mechanical devices, the way they're using them, there's a clear understanding of what the teams are doing.'' Darby said teams are using different methods to create a "hook and ladder fire truck effect that allows the rear axle to turn so the rear of the car follows the front.'' He said there's nothing in the current rulebook that doesn't allow that, but he didn't rule out that changing in 2013. "It's just a direct everybody has gone to maximize, optimize,'' Darby said. "Right now it's pretty level throughout the garage. If you take the most extreme to the least developed, it's not a huge difference.''(ESPN)(8-24-2012) espn.go.com/racing/story/_/id/8298960/rear-housing-modifications-legal-nascar-says&campaign=link&source=JAYSKI

NASCAR Technical Bulletin Update: Rear-end suspension limits: NASCAR issued a technical bulletin Thursday, Sept. 6 that reconfirms the limits NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams can go in setting up their rear end suspensions in their race cars. Effective Sept. 12, the truck trailing arm front mounting bushing assemblies may be built to allow a maximum of ¼ inch of total movement in one direction only. Truck trailing arm front mounting bushings must be designed to move freely throughout the ¼ inch of approved travel. Previously approved front truck trailing arm bushing assemblies which allow more than ¼ inch of movement or that do not move freely throughout the ¼ inch travel will no longer be permitted for use in competition. Approved front truck trailing arm bushing assemblies must not be altered after being approved. Wheelbase, rear axle location (parallel), offset and rear axle housing alignment will be inspected both pre-race and post-race.
Ambrose hoping to stay with RPM,-
Ambrose hopes to return to the #9 in 2013: #9-Marcos Ambrose admitted Thursday that his contract status remains unsettled for next season and beyond at Richard Petty Motorsports, which fields his #9 Ford. "Does that worry me? Yeah, that worries me a little bit," Ambrose said. "I've had a pretty good season, and I want to be in NASCAR. I'm working with RPM. Hopefully I can be with them for a long time to come, but there is no guarantee. Obviously RPM has been through a lot this season, as they have the last few seasons. And I'm here to help them get to where they want to go, and hopefully it works out for me." Sammy Johns, director of operations for RPM, recently said that the company is working hard to keep Ambrose and Aric Almirola, driver of the #43, in the fold for next season. But he admitted that there are other matters that must be determined, such as which manufacturer umbrella RPM will operate under. "We've got a lot of things in the works right now," Johns said. Ambrose understands. He said he's also very confident it all will work out and he will remain in the #9 car for RPM. "They're telling me that they're good for two cars. And I believe 'em," Ambrose said. "I would love to drive one of them, but it's a matter of making it all work. We're hopefully going to get serious here soon and see how it all stacks up. But right now, we're just going to focus on this Chase. We've all got good intentions to keep it all together, so I don't see why it wouldn't all work out."(NASCAR.com)(9-8-2012)

Will we see (RPM) Ambrose in a GM powered Chevrolet?
Petty to Chevy?: According to sources, principals from RPM met with Richard Childress Racing management earlier this week to discuss the possibility of becoming a satellite team similar to the relationship that the Welcome, N.C.-based organization has with #78 Furniture Row Racing. "No comment on anything because I don't have a clue what's going on," Richard Petty said. "When we get everything squared away, we'll talk to you. Other than that, there ain't nothing. There ain't nothing there 'til we bring something there, and right now we have nothing." Sources say the move to Chevrolet would include technical support from the manufacturer in the form of sheet metal, wind tunnel time and engineering. Petty Enterprises last ran Pontiacs under the General Motors banner before switching to Dodge in 2001.(FoxSports)(9-8-2012)

Bass Pro to sponsor Stewart? Bass Pro Shops is expected to be a co-primary sponsor for #14-Tony Stewart's NASCAR Sprint Cup effort next season. Office Depot, which supported Stewart since the inception of Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009, will withdraw its sponsorship at the end of the season. The company was the primary on 22 of the 38 NASCAR Cup races this season. Mobil 1, which was a co-primary with Office Depot this season, will continue in that role in 2013. Bass Pro Shops has enjoyed a long relationship with NASCAR. The outdoors company sponsored Martin Truex Jr. in a limited run at Dale Earnhardt Inc. when the driver won his first Nationwide Series title in 2004. The company took over as a full primary the following year and graduated with Truex to the Sprint Cup Series for his first full season in 2006. When DEI merged with Ganassi Racing prior to the 2009 season, Bass Pro Shops accompanied Truex and then remained with the team with Jamie McMurray when he returned to Ganassi in 2010 and has been with McMurray since.(Fox Sports)(9-13-2012) msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/Tony-Stewart-Bass-Pro-Shops-2013-NASCAR-Sprint-Cup-091312

Looks likely that RPM will stay FORD. Petty expects to stay with Ford; Ambrose and Almirola to return: Richard Petty is busy lining up his team for 2013 (and, hopefully, beyond), and he is moving in waters that remain choppy and with changeable tides. Discussions about Richard Petty Motorsports' future continue, but the landscape as it currently is painted appears to keep the RPM cars in the Ford camp for the next season, although the King has been talking with more than a few other possible partners. "It looks like there is not going to be a lot of change there for next year, but there's no concrete stuff yet," Petty said Friday at Chicagoland Speedway. "We're figuring on staying in exactly the same place, with the same operation from a manufacturing standpoint. We don't see a change unless somebody else comes up with something."
