Thought we could have a chat about some old races. Thought I would pick one that wasn't won by a Ford or a Holden, so there is no bias.
This one was won by a Jaguar. A V12 Jag driven by John Goss/Armin Hahne. 2nd went to the Bob Jane BMW of Roberto Ravaglia/Johnny Cecotto and 3rd to another Jag of Tom Walkinshaw/Win Percy.
However there were many great drives in this race
This was the first year of the Group A international formula. The BMW was a very competitive package, with Richo dominating the championship.
The Ford Mustang got a kick along in their mid season homologation and was on the pace come enduro time. The Commodore was uncompetitive in the sprint races and also got a slight helping hand before the enduros, but they didn't get enough of their Group A specials done before the cut off. The did get a 5 speeder done and slightly less weight for the enduros, but a Commodore win looked very unlikely. There was also a Volvo driven by Kiwi Robbie Francevic, which was very fast, but unreliable.
The Aus/Nz field was also complimented by 3 TWR V12 Jaguars. These looked the cars too beat. Were quickest in a straight line and smashed it's opposition, especially up the mountain. They also had a wonderful sounding engine. The European BMW was also there and they were the other competitors.
Tom Walkinshaw got pole with this great lap here.
The first 30 laps were exciting with both the quick Grice Commodore and the Allam/Dickson Jag retiring very early. The Australian threats were dicing amongst themselves and providing great racing.
Not long after this Johnson's Mustang dropped out of contention with a split oil cooler in his Mustang.
A big change in the race happened about the time of Brock's first pitstop. Jim Richards spun on some oil and dropped a couple of laps. Richo would've got through this race on only 2 stops, and as we are to see, the others ahead of him had all sorts of late race problems and Richo would've walked it in.
The race then settled down with 4 major players left after the Francevic/Bowe Volvo ran into problems. The 2 Jags, the Brock Commodore and the Bob Jane BMW were to be the ones to fight the race out.
The Goss Jag was developing problems with a broke seat and then about 30 laps from home all hell broke lose. The Walkinshaw Jag had an oil cooler problem and dropped 3 laps. Then Brock broke his windscreen and had to stop twice to fix that, setting him back to being behind the Bob Jane BMW.
This then lead to a classic Brock catch-up drive, with him driving the backside off a car that really had no right in being competitive.
This chase ultimately failed with 3 laps to go with the 05 car having a broken timing chain and coasting into retirement.
The Goss/Hahne Jaguar then went onto win what will always be remembered as a classic race.
What are your memories of this event?
